I am a graduate of the College of St. Rose with a degree in Elementary Education/Spanish. My Masters Degreee is from SUNY Albany in the field of Spanish Language and Literature where I also completed all of my classwork towards my doctorate degree. I have taught at SUNYA as a Teaching Fellow,Teaching Assistant, and Lecturer. I also been an adjunct faculty member at Union College. I have taught Spanish part-time at Brown School in Schenectady for a number of years in the past along with St. Madeleine Sophie School where I am currently beginning my fourteenth year on the faculty.
Our family values Catholic education. In fact, our three oldest children are former graduates of SMS and we currently have our two younger children enrolled here at St. Madeleine's. The faculty and staff create a God-centered, loving family environment for each child. I am proud to be the parent of five SMS children and a language teacher to hundreds of others in my extended SMS family!
About the class
The Spanish program for students at St. Madeleine Sophie School is designed to be one of enrichment. The atmosphere is carefully designed to be one of low stress and high moticvation for the individual student.
Students at all levels are presented with opportunities to read, write and speak in Spanish during each session. In addition, pupils are invited to listen and repeat after the instructor numerous times during each class. Since young children are natural mimics, this is a logical and very comfortable technique for acquiring an "ear" for a second language. Acquisition of, and appreciation for the Spanish language and culture is encouraged through music and song, literature, tongue twisters, poetry, chants, choral reading, body movement, finger plays, drawing/art activities/ video-taping, and so on.
Primary Goal
The primary goal for the Spanish program at St. Madeleine Sophie School is to encourage and appreciation of, and respect for another language with its varied people and rich culture. In order to achieve this goal, we must first consistently demonstrate respect for God, our country, our school, our fellow classmates, ourselves, and the Spanish Teacher.
These are the lessons that promote a young child's positive acceptance of the larger world and the gifts that new and fascinating cultures, languages and people have to offer. It is expected that each SMS graduate will then carry this spiritual, respectful and curious attitude into his/her middle school years and beyond!
